The damage to the PSNI motorbike after the Newry Three Day crash looked significant.
PSNI officer badly injured Newry Three Day crash
The PSNI has said one of its officers was involved in the crash that forced stage 1 of the Newry Three Day to be neutralised.
It has issued an appeal for witnesses and shared a photo of the motorbike damaged in the crash.
The incident, involving a car and motorbike, occurred on the finishing circuit. And while it happened ahead of the race, a decision was taken to halt the action.
Later the stage was neutralised, with just the climbers and intermediate sprints points already scored counting towards the general classifications.
The PSNI yesterday issued a statement explaining what had happened and appealing for witnesses.
“Yesterday evening our colleagues from PSNI Traffic were assisting with a large cycle race in Warrenpoint,” it explained.
"At approximately 8:30pm a collision happened. (It was) in the area of the filling station on the Newry Road, Warrenpoint.
"(It) involved a blue Ford Fusion and a police motorcycle. The motorcyclist suffered quite serious but non life-threatening injuries.”
“If you were in the area around this time and saw the lead up to, or the collision itself, or if you have any dash cam footage please get in touch with us by phoning 101 and quoting ref 1482 22/06/18.
“Medical staff would say this incident would have led to much more serious and significant injuries had it not been for the excellent kit the motorcyclist was wearing.
“So (it is) a timely reminder that shorts and flip flops aren't appropriate motorcycling gear.”
Thankfully the officer, while injured, will recover. We wish him the very best in his recovery.
The cycling community’s gratitude goes to the PSNI for all the excellent work they do to keep racing on the road.
