Kirsten Wild was relegated from 1st to 37th place at the Prudential RideLondon Classique (1.WWT) today and so lost the €25,000 winner’s prize.
The Dutch woman, who rides for WNT-Rotor
Pro Cycling, found herself boxed in just before the line.
She moved to her left to create space
for a clear run at the line and as she did her back wheel took the front wheel
from a rider behind.
It caused that rider to fall, with the
crash spreading across the bunch and taking down multiple riders while sending
bikes bouncing across the tarmac.
Kirsten Wild believed she had won just after the finish,
describing it as “the best feeling to beat the best sprinters in the world”.
However, she was then disqualified after being “judged to
have deviated from her chosen line and endangered other riders”.
But when a review of the decision took place, the
disqualification was lifted but Wild was still relegate to 37th position and
last in the group.
Lorena Wiebes (Parkhotel Valkenburg), the 20-year-old
Dutch national champion, was then upgraded from 2nd to winner.
And that meant the €25,000 winner’s purse passed from
Wild to Wiebes in circumstances even the winner couldn’t believe.
“I didn't have a very good position over the last five
kilometres so I had to go to the front and start my sprint really early,” she
said.
“It was a surprise win at the end. Kirsten came over in the last 50m but she was disqualified so it was really surprising. It's just crazy.”
