The stage winner and yellow jersey and is wife on the ground after the conclusion of stage 3 in Colombia

A professional cyclist has crashed into his wife just seconds after winning a race in Colombia. Luis Carlos Chía sprinted in to victory on stage 3 of Vuelta a Colombia, in a very heavy downpour and with flash flooding, when he hit his wife and both were left injured on the ground.

The 25-year-old riding for Supergiros-ALC Manizales had won the opening stage of the race on Friday and put in a very strong finish yesterday to overhaul a breakaway man on the line and win stage 3, after 117km of racing into Monteria.

He sprinted over the line and took his hands off the bars in celebration and it appears his speed and the very wet conditions - not to mention his wife being in the road just after the finish - combined to bring about disaster.

However, the rider's wife - Claudia Roncancio - is a cyclist herself and a photographer, and it appears she may have been in the road taking photos.

"Today I wanted to brake and the brakes blocked up, and I went straight into her," the yellow jersey and stage winner said of colliding with his wife just after the line.

Chía was able to get up and gather himself so he could visit the podium for the stage winner and yellow jersey presentation. His wife was taken to hospital and required four stitches, though it appears she did not sustain any serious injury.
