The Belgian media has added up the prize money won by the top pro cyclocross riders during the 2019-2020 season, with some of the top stars coming away with more than you might think.

While prize money is notoriously poor in cycling, some of
the riders have taken six figure sums this season in prizes.

Added to their salaries and appearance fees it means many
of them are making tidy incomes, even if cyclocross is a much smaller
discipline than pro road racing.

World champion Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado (21) topped the
prize money list as she turned her consistency across the season into very
solid earnings.

However, the Dutch star said her prize money – at €126,870
for the season – is her biggest chunk of earnings; more than salary or
appearance fees.

And while the top male earner was Eli Iserbyt, on €108,380, he said his other earnings were higher.

The money may not be a king’s ransom, but it’s higher
than one might expect, especially for the women who are mostly treated very
poorly in cycling when it comes to earning a living.

World champion Mathieu van der Poel is the biggest star
in the sport but he won just €66,000 as he did not target races in, for
example, the World Cup, as much as the likes of Belgian Iserbyt.

However, his salary and his appearance fees would be very
significantly higher than cyclocross prize money.

Nieuwsblad reports that Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado came
out as the top earner due to the fact that many of the top prizes in the sport
are now equal for men and women.

Through the World Cup she earned €42,950 which was behind fellow Dutch rider Annemarie Worst, who won €55,900.

However in the DVV Trofee Alvarado won €35,430 and
claimed €40,220 at Superprestige as well as €3,270 at Losse Cross, among other
prizes, bringing her total to €126,870.

Worst was next female rider in the prize money list on a
total of €97,280 with a big drop then to Sanne Cant on €25,215.

In the men’s rankings, Iserbyt took €48,200 in the World
Cup behind Toon Aerts who claimed €57,300.

Iserbyt was top earner at DVV Trofee on €32,295 and
claimed €22,820 in the Superprestige behind top earner there Laurens Sweeck, on
€33,870.

Overall Iserbyt was top on €108,380 from Aerts on €75,125, Sweeck on €75,020, then Van der Poel on €66,000 and Michael Vanthourenhout on €57,985.
