Primoz Roglic Giro push: Two spectators took up position on the roadside, relaying their pushing of the Jumbo-Visma rider.
Primoz Roglic was given a little more work to do if he is
to get onto the Giro d’Italia podium, after being pushed by spectators
yesterday.
Climbing towards the finish at Croce d'Aune-Monte Avena
on stage 20, two spectators pushed the Jumbo-Visma man.
As a result a 10-secomd time penalty was imposed on him.
And now he must make up 23 seconds on Mikel Landa (Movistar) if he is to
leapfrog him into 3rd place overall after the final TT.
The two fans who pushed him worked in relay; one taking
over from the other after his effort was over.
After the stage, Roglic urged fans to cheer on the riders
but not to touch them. However, he accepted the penalty and said he was grateful
for the support he had received.
He also said he was determined to try as hard as he could
to overhaul Landa in Sunday’s 17km TT in Verona.
“We will see tomorrow, after the time trial in Verona, whether
I had the legs to finish on the podium today,” he said of yesterday’s stage 20
when he ceded almost one minute to his main rivals.
“I gave 110 percent and kept fighting until the finish. I
cannot blame myself. This was a very tough queen stage.
“About the spectators; I can only say that it is
impossible to keep everything and everyone under control.
“ There were many Slovenian supporters today who came to
encourage me. I am very grateful for that.”
