Seamus Sinnott of Wexford Wheelers is emerging on the junior scene, his switch to cycling already paying dividends.

Seamus Sinnott’s is a name that has been featuring more and more in the race results since the season began, with the first-year junior taking his second win of the campaign at the Cyclesport Dungarvan GP on Sunday.
The 16-year-old Wexford Wheelers man had already tasted success this year when he claimed victory in the Deenside Cup in Kilkenny at the beginning of the month
On Sunday he played it safe and when he saw nothing was getting away he opted to wait for the sprint, which he won in fine style.
“I knew if there was a break going it’d go on the hill,” he said.
“A few juniors went there but none of the attacks stuck; everyone was following the moves. So I positioned myself high up the bunch coming in for the finish.
“A guy attacked at the bottom of the hill and when he got brought back I attacked and got away. I think I had around a bike-length at the finish so it was very tight.”
Having finished school for the summer, he will now turn his attentions to the Junior Tour.
“It’s all training now for the Junior Tour. I’ve two wins behind me so hopefully I can do okay in it.
“I’m delighted as well as surprised the way the season has gone. The training is paying off and I owe him my coach Tosh Lavery an awful lot.
“I wouldn’t have a clue only for him. He comes down at the weekend and gives a lot of us great advice.
“The Junior Tour is my next goal but I know it will be seriously competitive; it’ll be a new experience for me and the plan is to learn and get as much experience as I can.”
Interestingly, Sinnott was a very decent handball player and was ranked eighth in the world in a previous life. He still plays, but the bike is his new-found passion.
“I was very big into the handball. The World Championships were amazing and I was really good at that.
“I still play the odd time but I just took up cycling to keep fit. I got in touch with Tosh and he made out a programme for me and I followed that and got a few wins. Hopefully, with the right attitude I can add a few more before the year is out.
