The first big stage race of the 2015 calendar takes place in the west this weekend with Westport Covey Wheelers hosting the ever popular Rás Maigh Eo.

There’s a field of 130 down to start with riders coming from all over the country to take part.

The race is open to A2, A3, junior and female riders only, though there is a separate one-day race for A4s in Westport on Sunday.

The A2-A3 stage race consists of three stages; a 90km road race on Saturday followed by an 8km time trial on Sunday morning and another 90km road stage on Sunday afternoon.

The big favourite has to be the in-form Daire Feeley who will lead a strong iTap squad.

The former Irish junior international was unlucky last year when he hit the deck overtaking a car on the technical run into the finish on stage 1.

But he still managed to win the white jersey and having ridden very well against the elites in a number of breakaways in recent weeks, his sights will be firmly set on yellow this weekend.

Like Feeley, Tuomey has made some select breakaways in recent weeks but has been forced to settle for the runner-up spot and is chasing his first win of the year this weekend.

As well as stage wins, the yellow jersey and white junior jersey, also up for grabs are sprinters' and climbers' jerseys.

Former Westport Covey rider and Irish international triathlete Con Doherty should challenge for the overall too, as will Tony Bourke (Galway Bay CC) and a host of others.

The latter will be a firm favourite for the Credit Union-sponsored Mickey Palmer TT on Sunday morning.
