It is hard to look beyond Colm Cassidy for overall victory this weekend in the Ballinrobe Two-Day given the form he's in at present, but the field has plenty of quality (Photo, John Coleman – Dc Images. Homepage photo, Pawel Sadowski – Shutterstills.com)
The field is slightly down on last year but the quality is still very much in evidence as just short of 80 riders convene on Ballinrobe for the annual two-day promoted by Western Lakes CC.
Winner of stage 1 at the Suir Valley Three Day, Colm Cassidy, has to go into this weekend as a hot favourite. The TT stage 2 will suit the Aquablue man as he is one of the strongest testers in the country.
He rides with Sean Lacey and Anthony Walsh as team mates, both of whom are also potential overall winners.
Daire Feeley of Team iTAP will also be one sure to have a big impact on the race, both in the hunt for stage wins and the yellow jersey.
Similarly, the Newry Wheelers duo of Des Woods and Andrew Bye are capable of taking the battle to anybody in the field.
Paul O'Reilly of Fixx Rouleurs is a dark horse, while the men from Mego Racing and Galway Bay CC can also make a big impact.
The format has been refined for this weekend, with the stage 2A time-trial reverting to the original format; a 7.4 kilometre test against the clock on a flatter route.
Last year the race took the riders up the viciously steep Lally’s Mountain but that’s been omitted this time around.
Stage 1 takes place on Saturday and features three categorised climbs, with the route running to 100 kilometres.
Stage 2A is the 7.4k test on Sunday morning while stage 2B is another road stage of 117 kilometres, but much flatter than the day before.
The organisers have said they may start the opening stage 30 minutes earlier, at the rescheduled time of 2.30pm.
This is to allow for followers of Mayo GAA get to a television in time to watch the county's All-Ireland senior football quarter-final with Donegal at Croke Park.
