Sean Lacey and Edge Racing team mates dishing it out

Sean Lacey (pictured leading) is looking for a fourth Lacey Cup win

Tralee Bicycle Club’s annual “Lacey Cup” gets the Munster road racing season underway this Sunday, February 26th.

Sean Lacey of the new Dan Morrissey-Speedy Spokes has won the Munster season opener for the past three years and will be looking to get his new team underway with a bang on Sunday with a fourth consecutive win.

Lacey’s team mates, including Tim Barry, will also be looking to impose themselves on the action during the 75km event.

However, they certainly won’t have it all their own way with the likes of last weekend’s Ned Flanagan in Co Kildare Robin Kelly (Waterford Racing Club) expected to be well in the mix.

There will also be a considerable challenge form the promoting club, with Paul Griffin in particular looking to take a home win to launch the club’s new kit and Manor West Hotel sponsorship for the season ahead.

Lacey Cup 2012 – Sunday, 26th February.

Tralee, Co Kerry

The Route

The 75km race will be run on a handicap basis and starts from Manor West Hotel, Tralee, with a neutralised roll out at 11.45am.

The race is held on the Dingle Peninsula and takes the riders from the Dingle road outside of Tralee through Blennerville and on to Camp.

There is a prime at Gleann na Gealt for the Jackie O’Connor Trophy, this climb comes after 15km of racing and is 4km long, averaging three per cent gradient.

The race then goes on to Annascaul, where the riders will turn left just outside the village on to Inch and Castlemaine. Then another left turn at Castlemaine and onto the start of the prime at the top of the Slieve Mish climb after 62km for the Teddy Griffin Trophy. The climb is also 4km long and averages 2.8 per cent gradient, before the descent to the finish at Skehanagh just outside the town of Tralee on the N70 (Tralee-Killorglin Road).

The 75km route is one complete loop of a very challenging route and tests the strongest of riders with the two climbs and rolling roads from start to finish.
