President Higgins has joined those congratulating Dan Martin on his Tour de France ride and combativity classification win.

Mr Higgins, facing into a fight of his own with upcoming elections, said Martin's ride would motivate those coming after him.

On the official Twitter account from Áras an Uachtaráin, the Irish President's official residence, Mr Higgins described as "outstanding" Martin's racing over the last three weeks.

“My warmest congratulations to Dan Martin on his outstanding performance in this year’s Tour de France, and on winning the award for the race’s ‘most combative’ rider,"  he said.

While the race was still on, and just after Dan Martin had won stage 6; Minister for Sport, Transport and Tourism Shane Ross TD congratulated the UAE Team Emirates rider on his victory.

Ross committed a faux pas in saying he'd be watching Martin's continued progress "and the other Irish entrants" with interest.

But of course Martin was the only Irishman in the Tour. Still, the sentiments were the right ones.

"I want to congratulate Dan Martin for his exceptional performance to achieve a stage win at the Tour de France," he said.

"This is an achievement that few Irish riders accomplish. And it is a testament to his hard work and dedication over many years of training and competition."
