Popular veteran rider latest cyclist to be killed on Irish roads

Corkman Paddy Cadogan was a highly-regarded and extremely well-liked member of the cycling community and his tragic passing is the latest cyclist to die on Irish roads this year.

The cycling community in Cork has been saddened by the tragic death of Paddy Cadogan who died following a collision with a 4x4 truck last week.

Cadogan, 78, was seriously injured when he collided with the vehicle on the hard shoulder of the Ballincollig bypass last Tuesday.

He had been in a critical condition since the accident but lost his fight for life yesterday.

From Bishopstown in the city, Mr Cadogan was a respected lecturer (in CIT) in his professional life, as well as being a philanthropist, academic and GAA fan who did tireless work for charity.

He was a fitness fanatic, with cycling being one of his big passions.

He had completed countless marathons for charitable causes and was on a training ride on the bypass when the accident occurred last week.

It’s understood the man driving the vehicle Cadogan crashed into had pulled onto the hard shoulder moments earlier to ask for directions to the hospice where he was visiting a sick relation.

Mr Cadogan’s funeral will take place after requiem Mass at 11.30am tomorrow with funeral afterwards to St James Cemetery, Chetwynd, Bandon Road, Cork.

He leaves behind a daughter and three sons. His wife Gemma had passed away some years ago.
