Mullingar Two-Day cancelled; replacement one-day race planned

The Mullingar Two-Day featured four separate races last year for all of the different categories, each with three stages. While one-day racing is planned this year by promoting club Lakeside, the loss of the two-day is a blow for the domestic scene.

One of the most popular stage races on the domestic calendar in the period after the An Post Rás, the Mullingar Two Day has been cancelled this year because the promoter’s search for a sponsor came to nothing.

The race was planned for later this month and while Cycling Ireland’s calendar includes it for the last weekend in June, Lakeside Wheelers have confirmed today that the event is definitely not taking place this season.

The absence of the race this year creates a big hole in a period of the season that is not as crowded with racing as the early part of the campaign before the Rás in mid May.

Last year Lakeside ran no fewer than four stage races on the same weekend, each taking in two road stages and a time trial. There was an event for A1 & A2 riders combined, a separate race for A3s, another for A4s and also a dedicated stage race for women.

The main event last year was won by Ryan Sherlock, with the then Cycleways rider having since progressed to the professional ranks with Irish-Indonesian team Polygon Sweet Nice.

However, despite Lakeside proving unable to secure a sponsor for the stage races this year the club is going ahead with a number of races on Sunday, June 30th.

The Mullingar GP will feature four races down for decision; A1&A2, A3s, A4s and women.

The race for the A4 riders and the separate event for female riders will both be two laps of a 36km loop. The A3 race will be three laps of the same circuit and the A1&A2 race will also be three laps. The circuit will take riders from Mullingar to Tyrrellspass, Rochfortbridge and back.

Entries in each race will be limited to 80 riders and online entry is open here now: https://eventmaster.ie/event.php?event_id=332
