Video: Police officer nearly costs rider stage win at Tour de l'Avenir

This was a very close call; the police officer's position on the road and then his movement combined to usher the rider the wrong way when he was leading solo just hundreds of metres before the finish line at the Tour de l'Avenir

Hungarian cyclist Attila Valter scored a great win at the Tour de l'Avenir today, though very nearly lost it at the finish.

The 21-year-old had been in the breakaway and pressed on solo on the final climb during the short but hilly 67km stage 9 from Villaroger to Tignes.

In the final two kilometres yellow jersey Tobias Foss (Norway) dropped the rest of the select group, swept past the others who had been in the breakaway and was hunting down Valter.

When the leader reached the final few hundred metres, a police officer standing in the road and then stepping towards Valter confused the rider.

The officer was trying to step out of the rider's way, but his position on the road and the way he moved ushered Valter down the side street where team vehicles were supposed to turn off.

Luckily others by the roadside shouted at the rider, who was able to stop and turn immediately; getting back on the right road and riding in to win.
