It may sound like a joke, but one of Britain's biggest police force's today searched for a cyclist in lycra because a woman complained he was walking around with an erection.
One of Britain’s biggest police forces launched a search for a man dressed in cycling gear after receiving a complaint he was walking around in lycra clothing sporting an erection.
It may sound like the stuff of April Fools’ Day jokes, but Greater Manchester Police treated the complaint seriously today, Tuesday, with a search for the man carried out.
- Irish racing cyclist left with seven-week erection after fall onto crossbar; cured in Dublin hospital
- Boom in Irish cycling linked to increased male infertility; 300km per week is danger zone
And while it appeared to slightly play down the incident later this evening, it Tweeted twice about the usual sighting.
At first it reported the complaint had been received and was being acted on, with a follow-up message later saying its efforts to find the man had come to nothing.
The Manchester Evening News reported a woman rang the police in a distressed state after seeing an over-excited cyclist in lycra with his, erm, over-excitement on show in the unforgiving clothing.
The woman reported her concerns about the man, who was in his 50s and was said to be acting suspiciously near a tram stop at Piccadilly Gardens.
Police officers were already in the area but came up short in the hunt for the middle aged man in lycra.
The Great Manchester Police Tweeted at 4.35pm: “Call from female reporting a male in lycra cycling shorts with an erection at Piccadilly tram stop. Patrols on route to take a look.”
And about 15 minutes later it sent out another message, this time with a hint of humour: : “No trace of any males in lycra shorts in Piccadilly, looks like he’s cycled off. No offences reported by informant.”
A representative from the police force later told The Manchester Evening News: “At 4.19pm, GMP received a call from a female reporting a suspicious male in his 50s wearing Lycra cycling shorts with what she thought was an erection at the tram stop in Piccadilly.
“Patrols were already in the area, however there was no trace of any such male.
“At no point was the male acting inappropriately and no other members of the public have reported any inappropriate behaviour.”
