Cycling Ireland's Off Road Commission has begun the planning process for sending a national team to the European Cyclocross Championships in Pontchâteau, France, on the first weekend of November.
Selection criteria have been set down and some self-financing aspects made clear by the commission from the outset, as the rider expression of interest process opens.
The commission said the number of riders to be selected has not been finalised. That means some riders who meet some or all of the criteria may not be selected. The criteria is a standard to put riders into contention to be picked, rather than guaranteeing selection.
Riders will be required to book and pay for their return flights to and from France once they have been informed they are selected to represent Ireland at the Europeans. There will be races for elites, U23s and juniors, though it is not yet clear if Irish riders will be selected to compete in all races.
The Cycling Ireland Off-Road Commission has also set out the following criteria:
- Riders must have the flexibility to travel to the event perhaps up to 3 days in advance.
- In order to be considered for selection, riders must have raced cyclo-cross regularly and competitively between September 1st, 2023, and October 16th, 2023.
- Additional value, within the selection process, will be placed on riders that have attended the CX development squad training camp at McCrystal’s Track, Co Louth, on September 16th, competed in Round 1 National Cyclocross Series, Falls Park, competed in relevant international competitions - within the qualification period.
- Results at the UCI C2 race at Clonmel Tipperary on the weekend of October 14th-15th will also be taken into consideration.
Riders wishing to be considered for selection to the European Cyclocross Championships must submit their cycling CV by close of play Monday, October 16th, 2023. An example CV is available here (Word document). CVs should be sent in PDF format to [email protected].
