One can clearly see from this mangled wreck that Ireneusz Bartkow took a huge impact from behind. The Polish father-of-two suffered a compound fracture to his spine and will wear a back brace for the next few months.

Ireneusz Bartkow had a very lucky escape last month when he was hit from behind by a vehicle travelling in the same direction as he was cycling.

The father of two, from Poland but living in Ireland and a Glendale CC rider, was out on a training ride after work in Rosslare when he was struck from behind.

The vehicle failed to stop at the scene and Bartkow was left to flag oncoming traffic for help before making his way to a nearby house and calling for help.

Since the incident on Monday January 23rd, Bartkow has been allowed to move back to his home.

But a compound fracture to his spine means he’ll spend the next number of months in a body brace.

The photos below were taken by close friend, work colleague and VC Glendale teammate Toby Watson.

They illustrate just how badly Bartkow’s bike was damaged by the force of the impact and needless to say, he lost quite an amount of skin as well.
