This crash scene photo shows how lucky a 14-year-old cyclist was to survive a hit and run in Dublin on Sunday evening.

Sean O'Reilly (14) is currently in hospital being treated for serious injuries. His father John said he thought the boy was dead.

The hit and run occurred at a pedestrian crossing on the Fortunestown Rd, south west Dublin, just before 9pm on Sunday.

Reports suggest the driver involved - in a Volvo or Saab car - broke a red light and hit Sean.

He was thrown from his bike, which was broken into pieces on impact. The victim suffered a number of skull and face fractures, a broken leg, fractured neck and head abrasions.

A family friend was sitting in traffic and witnessed what happened. He tended to Sean at the scene and called his father, who arrived within minutes.
