Philips Manager of the Month Award for Cycling Ireland coach

Brian Nugent, Cycling Ireland technical director, receives his Philips Sports Manager of the Month Award for February 2017 from Paul Watson of Philips Ireland.

 

Cycling Ireland's technical director Brian Nugent has won a prestigious managerial award following on from the success of the Irish track team at recent UCI World Cup meetings.

Nugent has been named Philips Lighting Sports Manager of the Month for February.

The award, presented by domestic and international commissaire Paul Watson who works for Philips Ireland, follows an incredible run by the Irish riders in the high performance programme Nugent runs.

At the UCI World Cup in Cali, Columbia, last month Mark Downey won gold in the points race.

He also won silver with his partner Felix English in the Madison race.

Lydia Gurley won bronze in the women’s scratch race, completing the most successful World Cup ever for Cycling Ireland.

A week later, at the UCI World Cup in Los Angles, Mark Downey and Felix English went one place better won Ireland’s first ever Gold medal in the Madison.

Meanwhile, Cycling Ireland stalwart Jack Watson has been honoured by the European Cycling Union for his decades of service to the sport at home and abroad.

 

Philips Manager of the Month Award for Cycling Ireland coach

He was presented with a merit award at the Union European Cycling (UEC) congress in Brussels, Belgium, at the weekend.

The congress was attended by all 50 European national federations and Watson was one of five UEC Merit Award winners.

He has been involved in administrative roles in cycling since 1958 and has served continuously in various posts since then, including 30 years as Irish cycling's registrar.

According to a statement from Cycling Ireland, the positions Watson has held during a remarkable cycling career, which continues and is busy as ever, include:

  • Chairman Northern Ireland Cycling Federation
  • Chairman Ulster Cycling Federation
  • Chairman Irish Cycling Tripartite Committee
  • President Federation of Irish Cyclists (original name of Cycling Ireland)
  • Secretary Irish Cycling Tripartite Committee
  • Delegate N.I. Commonwealth Games council on behalf of NICF
  • Delegate Irish Olympic Council on behalf of Cycling Ireland
  • Delegate European Cycling Union (UEC) on behalf of cycling Ireland
  • Delegate International Cycling Union (UCI). One of 14 delegates representing the European Cycling Union
  • Currently Honorary Secretary Cycling Ireland since 1995 - re-elected every two years by nomination and vote of members
  • Currently Honorary Vice President Cycling Ireland since 1995
  • Technical Consultant Tour of Almaty (KAZ)
