Here’s a couple of photos capturing the moment that Philip Deignan (Unitedhealthcare) crashed from the initially breakaway with eventual gold and silver medal winning riders Matt Brammeier (Champion System) and Philip Lavery (AC Bisontine).
They went clear on the second of 13 laps, but Deignan would soon come a cropper next time around on a corner of the tight streets in the village of Carlingford.
As you’ll see in these photos captured by Simon Devlin and also Adrian O’Connor of Black Umbrella Productions, Deignan quickly got back up again but his chain had come off.
He was then helped by those standing by to get the chain back on and move off again, and while he would later join the front of the race he abandoned, apparently impacted by his crash injuries.
Just below these photos you’ll find a short video clip of the eventual medal winners – Damian Shaw (Aquablue), with Brammeier and Lavery – coming into the finish.
Brammeier very cleverly at the last moment dived to the right of a traffic island around 250 metres from the finish.
He wrong-footed Lavery, who was forced to continue down the left of the island, and was only able to dive across the road after Brammeier when the champion had gained a couple of lengths. Lavery, who looks to have been in a big gear, couldn’t close down the gap that Brammeier gained with his jump.
And into the headwind finish Brammeier maintained his slim advantage all the way to the line, showing his smarts from his days on the track have never left him.
