Philip Deignan backs Brailsford, says Froome entitled to own opinion

The Irishman said a report that Team Sky riders were about to approach Dave Brailsford to ask him to step aside was not true.

Philip Deignan has voiced his support for under-pressure Dave Brailsford as the head of Team Sky.

He told cyclingnews at Paris-Nice he was surprised at one of the site's stories in recent days. It suggested some of the riders were considering asking Brailsford to step aside.

Much has been made of the fact that many of the riders had tweeted their support for Brailsford of late, yet team leader Chris Froome had not.

Deignan has not tweeted out a message of support for Brailsford.

His words today strongly challenged any assumption that his lack of a tweet was in any way significant.

Deignan said he did not know if Froome supported Brailsford.

"Froome is entitled to his own opinion, and I've no say in that. That's up to him,” he added.

But the story that gave the impression riders wanted Brailsford out was not true.

“To be honest, I was pretty surprised to see your article saying that some riders wanted to get rid of Dave,” Deignan told cyclingnews.

Team frustrated, angered by report

Donegal man Deignan, who rarely speaks to the media, said the story had frustrated and angered the team.

“The atmosphere in the team is still really good. The morale is really good and it's remained unchanged.

“Dave is the guy we want in the job. It was strange to see that story a few days ago about riders looking to get him out.

“It's absolutely not true from the guys we've spoken to here and the rest of the team. It's not true really.

"The vast majority of the riders, all the riders, are genuinely behind Dave."
