Peter Sagan Worlds campaign hit by illness
Originally pencilled in to ride the TTT at the World Championships with Bora-hansgrohe, Peter Sagan will not ride the event.
His team has said his build-up to the Worlds has been hit by illness. And in a big to get him to the start line of the elite men’s road race next weekend he has decided to sit out the team test.
He tuned up for the worlds with an altitude camp in the US. He followed that up by riding the Grand Prix de Quebec, which he won, and Grand Prix de Montreal in Canada
However, when he travelled back from North America his team said he suffered a sore throat and high temperatures.
"The plan was changed because he should focus entirely on the road race,” Bora-Hansgrohe media officer Ralph Scherzer said in a TV interview in Norway.
He added when Sagan completed his altitude training camp he was a lot of tired than the team expected.
Patxi Vila, who coaches Sagan, told cyclingnews the rider had a sore throat. However, he said once he rested and trained at home for a few extra days he should be right for the road race.
The condition does not sound serious, but in the week before the Worlds it is unknown how it will impact him.
Peter Sagan is the elite men’s world champion, having won the title for the last two years.
The course in Bergen should suit him. And if he is in full health he would be one of the red hot favourites to take a third straight title.
