Peter Sagan signs new Bora-hansgrohe contract, may ride Giro

Peter Sagan has signed a new longer-term contract with Bora-hansgrohe and he may ride the Giro as soon as next year.

Having ridden for Bora-hansgrohe for two years Peter Sagan has now penned a new longer term contract with team.

The new contract will keep him at the German WorldTour team until 2021. And the squad has also extended several other riders until then.

They include Sagan’s brother Juraj along with Erik Baška, Maciej Bodnar, Daniel Oss and Marcus Burghardt.

They squad recently signed young German star Maximilian Schachmann as part of its focus on German riders.

The 24-year-old joins his compatriots Pascal Ackerman (24) and Emanuel Buchmann (25) at the WorldTour outfit, which counts Ireland’s Sam Bennett on its roster until the end of next year.

It was announced yesterday that Peter Sagan had agreed new terms at a press conference near Kufstein, Austria.

It is the same region that Sunday’s world championships road race will start from. Sagan will be going for his fourth title, though it appears to be a course for climbers.

The team said while Sagan was a star of the Tour de France he may also target the Giro. The Slovenian suggested that may happen next year but was not definitive.

He said he was delighted to be staying with Bora-hansgrohe for at least three more seasons.

“It was a straightforward decision for me to take, even if I still have one more season to go under my current contract,” the three-time world champion said.

“I've enjoyed two remarkable years with this team and I wouldn't want to move from somewhere that has given me so much trust, support and belief in me, even in the most difficult moments.

“I feel confident the coming years with Bora-hansgrohe will be as fulfilling as the first two.”

Team manager Ralph Denk said the deal was possible because both Bora and hansgrohe had extended their sponsorship of the squad.

“. Peter is the star of cycling. He is not only one of the most successful riders, but also a real brand ambassador who fascinates even those outside our sport,” explained Denk of Sagan.

“It’s quite understandable that we have re-signed him early. It is a pleasure to work with him and we all get along well.”

The team now hoped to build on the “remarkable successes” it had already achieved with the rider.

“His victory at Paris-Roubaix was of course a true highlight,” Denk said of Sagan’s season so far in 2018.

“But we are still aiming to progress further. We continue to foster ambitious goals, and with Peter we can count on a rider who is gifted with incredibly rare talent.

“Yet in his slipstream there is also ample room for our young guns to develop, with all the attention, public interest and media being focused upon him.

“For riders like Patrick Konrad, Pascal Ackermann and Emanuel Buchmann, this setup has worked very well.

“I think we are on track heading into the future. We are still growing as a team and Peter Sagan will remain a foundational aspect of this process.”
