Peter Sagan linked with move to Sam Bennett’s Deceuninck-QuickStep

Peter Sagan celebrates his 2015 world title win in the US. He is now being linked with a move to Deceuninck-QuickStep, which would mean being reunited with Sam Bennett, if the Irishman stays at the team

Peter Sagan, whose contract with Bora-hansgrohe expires at the end of this year, has been linked in European media reports with a move to Deceuninck-QuickStep.

If the Slovak joined the Belgian WorldTour team it would
mean reuniting with Sam Bennett as the duo were team mates at Bora-hansgrohe
until the end of the 2019 season.

Bennett's contract with the team expires this year. Given the success of his time with the squad so far, Irish cycling fans will be hoping he renews and stays put for at least the next couple of seasons.

Specialized was instrumental in Sagan moving to
Bora-hansgrohe and its financial clout and a desire to continue its
relationship with the three-time world champion means it will likely have the
biggest say in where he goes next.

If it agreed to meet much of his estimated €5 million per year salary demand, with Deceuninck-QuickStep meeting the rest, the move could easily happen.

Sam Bennett is riding high and it's hard to see how the arrival of any other rider into his team, even Peter Sagan, in any way undermining the support he is currently receiving

French newspaper L’Equipe has linked Sagan with the Belgian outfit and team boss Patrick Lefevere has added to the building speculation, telling the media in Belgium that he liked Sagan.

When asked by Het Nieuwsblad if
he would be interested in Sagan, and if he would be among a group of riders he
could build a team around, Lefevere said: "On my terms, yes. But not a
word has been said about it yet, so I can't say much about it."

Lefevere is said to be trying to retain his current
sponsors but also to increase his budget. He has complained repeatedly about
being the most prolific team in the sport but having a budget much smaller than
many other teams.
