Peter Sagan has been fined by the courts in Monaco for an incident back in April when the police pulled over the car was traveling in on suspicion those in the vehicle were breaking a Covid19-related curfew.
Reports in southern France stated Sagan struggled with police officers who attempted to take him from the car and that one officer injured his hand during the incident.
Sagan's lawyer said the rider reacted in the way he did as he believed he was being taken to a hospital for a compulsory vaccine. The Slovakian was not vaccinated at the time.
He added that several hours after the incident, and because Sagan had consumed alcohol on the night in question, he had no memory of the incident but apologised for it.
Sagan's lawyers were also unhappy at the way he was treated during the early morning incident back in April.
“For several hours our client was left without a lawyer. He was notified of the facts two and a half hours after his arrest," the lawyer said. "Putting aside his aggressive and arrogant attitude, he was on his way home and he got angry when it came to taking him to the hospital in Monaco.”
Sagan was fined €5,000 for injuring the police officer, €100 for breaking the Covid-19 curfew rules and was also told to pay €1,500 to the police officer.
The French newspaper Nice-Matin said the incident occurred at 12.30am on April 25th, when Sagan was a passenger in a car and was being driven home from a nightclub.
The report stated Sagan “struggled like a madman” when the officers on the scene attempted to take him from the car, with one of the officer's injuring his right hand.
His lawyer said he had gotten involved in the incident as he had been drinking, which he was not accustomed to, and also out of fear as he believed he was being taken to a hospital for a forced vaccine.
