Peraud shares photo of facial injuries despite helmet; not good

Jean-Christophe Peraud has shared this photo on Twitter showing nasty looking facial wounds even after he's been cleaned up at hospital.

Jean-Christophe Peraud (AG2R) has taken to Twitter to post this image of his facial injuries after crashing out of the Giro d’Italia on Sunday’s stage 3.

The French veteran – who was aiming for a top 10 finish and was an outside punt for a podium finish – crashed out with just over 100km remaining on the stage.

He fell at a roundabout while in the main peloton and it was clear immediately he was in big trouble.

And while wearing a helmet at the time of the crash – as all pro riders are obliged to when racing – the 38-year-old was left with some very nasty cuts and bruises.

“I feel OK, I am conscious and it is good news,” Peraud said in remarks issued on his behalf by his team.

“I don’t remember the crash. At the hospital a doctor told me that Patrick Gretsch crashed and then I remember his crash.

“But it’s my only memory of what happens. It was nervous and windy but I don’t understand why we crash. At the moment, the only important thing is that I am healthy.”

Gretsch appeared to clip the roundabout with his pedal and Peraud then came down just behind him, going over the handlebars and smashing his face into the tarmac.

His team’s doctor Eric Bouvat said Peraud had “a cranial trauma, a facial trauma with loss of consciousness, various bruises and dermabrasion on upper and lower limbs”.

The medic also confirmed Peraud, who was riding his first Giro, underwent a brain and face scan in hospital where no fractures or internal injuries were revealed.

Peraud immediately after the crash; it was clear pretty quickly his race was over, though he seems to be in reasonable condition now.
