The young woman is now critically ill in hospital with a head injury. Gardai believe she clashed heads with the cyclist she was in collision with in Dublin city.

A teenage student is critically injured in a Dublin hospital after being in collision with a cyclist in the city.

The female pedestrian and the male cyclist are believed to have clashed heads on impact.

However, while the cyclist was examined in hospital and released a short time later the woman remains critically ill.

She is an 18-year-old from abroad who has been attending college in Ireland. The cyclist is a 22-year-old; also believe to be a foreign national.

Reports indicate the woman had been shopping in a newsagents on Gardener St in the north inner city just before the incident.

She came out of the shop and as she was walking across the road just before 7pm she was in collision with the cyclist. He was riding through the junction at the time.

They both fell to the ground and the emergency services were alerted.

Both were brought to hospital by ambulance. However, while the cyclist has been discharged the woman is still in intensive care and has critical head injuries.

Gardai have launched an investigation and are appealing for anyone who saw the incident to contact them.

The stretch of road where the collision occurred is one of the busiest in Dublin and was closed for a period last evening.
