McQuaid is under pressure at the UCI and says he cannot be away from the office on trips abroad
UCI president Pat McQuaid has stepped down from the panel of the International Olympic Committee considering bids from nations wishing to host the 2020 Olympic Games.
The Irishman, who has been dealing with the fall-out from the Lance Armstrong affair and allegations about the UCI in that regard, has said he is too busy to attend the panel’s upcoming meetings and decided he would ask to be excused and replaced by somebody else.
"It's quite simple," McQuaid was quoted in reports this evening, Wednesday.
"I have too much going on and I can't afford to be spending two weeks away from the office in March."
McQuaid was appointed to the ten-member bid city evaluation commission last September as the representative of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations.
Patrick Baumann, a Swiss IOC member and leading official of the international basketball federation will replace McQuaid on the panel evaluating the 2020 Olympic bids.
IOC vice president Craig Reedie said his organisation needed to find somebody else to sit on the bids evaluation panel because McQuaid said he did not have the time to make upcoming meetings.
The IOC panel is assessing the 2020 bids from Madrid, Tokyo and Istanbul and will pay four-day visits to each place in March to compile a report on each as part of the process to choose the host city by September.
McQuaid said he did not have the time at present to make the trips to each city.
"I contacted ASOIF, because I was their representative, and suggested that they find a replacement," he said.
