A motorist who happened across a cyclist who lay dying in the road having just been the victim of a hit and run stopped his car and stole the bicycle.
The motorist then drove off with the bike, leaving the injured and unconscious cyclist at the scene, with the victim then dying from his injuries.
A teenager has been charged with driving the car that hit the cyclist before fleeing. But the second motorist who moments later stole the bike has yet to be traced.
The horrific incident occurred in the US last Monday week on a remote road northwest of Fort Wayne in Indiana at 8pm.
The dead cyclist has been named as Nicholas James Mruk (24).
Local people alerted the emergency services to the crash but by the time medics reached him the victim had died at the scene.
Witnesses have told the police the vehicle carrying the person who stole the bike was possibly a dark-coloured minivan.
And information from people who witnessed the collision has also assisted police in making the arrest of the man now charged with hitting the victim and leaving the scene.
A post mortem on the deceased Mr Mruk’s remains found he had died from blunt force trauma consistent with being hit by a vehicle.
Four days after the incident local police arrested the 19-year-old suspect who was taken to Allen County Jail.
He now faces a level 5 felony count of leaving the scene of a personal injury crash resulting in death, according to the Allen County Sheriff.
"The Allen County Sheriff’s Department has made an arrest in the fatal hit-skip crash that killed Nicholas Mruk on October 31, 2106, in the 13000 block of Hand Road," a statement from the Sheriff's Department said.
"With help from members of the community and surrounding Law Enforcement Agencies, Allen County Crash Investigators were able to develop a suspect, Aaron Daniel Moser, a 19 year old male from Decatur, Indiana.
"Aaron was arrested and booked into Allen County Lockup on one count of Leaving the Scene of a Person Injury Crash, Resulting in Death, a Level 5 Felony.
"Allen County Officials would like to thank the community members for their assistance with the investigation."
