Any Irish cyclists or cycling fans interested in the historic big moments in the sport will love these 'Sunday in Hell' events in Dublin, Wicklow and Waterford. Above, the cover of William Fotheringham's book.
Irish cycling fans are in for a real treat later this year when the iconic Paris-Roubaix film ‘A Sunday in Hell’ is screened here.
It will be shown in three locations – Dublin, Wicklow and Waterford. And journalist William Fotheringham will also appear at the screenings.
Fotheringham, who has documented British and pro cycling in his books and newspaper journalism for decades, wrote a book about the 1976 Sunday in Hell movie.
The book, also called A Sunday in Hell, was published earlier this year. It went behind the making of the film and also documents the riders who starred in the 1976 race and movie.
The movie was made by Danish film maker, Jorgen Leth, and has become an iconic piece of work; a status that drove Fotheringham to write his book about it.
Later this year the film will be screened and then Fotheringham will take part in a public interview and questions and answers session.
So the three screenings, with interviews, should be fantastic events. The details are:
- October 21st: Imagine Arts Festival, Waterford City.
- November 4th: Axis Theatre, Ballymun, Dublin.
- November 5th: Mermaid Arts Centre in Bray, Co Wicklow.
The proceeds of all three evenings go to Pieta House. Those promoting the events summarise them in the following way:
“In 1976 a little-known Danish film maker, Jorgen Leth, embarked on an ambitious project to capture the spirit of cycling’s toughest and cruellest classic, Paris-Roubaix, in a new and epic way.
“Leth tried to show every significant moment during the day, to portray its heroes – Roger de Vlaeminck, Eddy Merckx, Freddy Maertens – as mythical figures, and used radical techniques.
“They included a helicopter-mounted Wescam, an experimental choral soundtrack - and the finest cameramen of the day.
“The result was probably the finest-ever depiction of a single-day cycle race; a film that has itself become a classic.
“Best-selling writer William Fotheringham has written a widely praised ‘biography’ of Leth’s master piece.
“Fotheringham has explored how it was conceived and made and what became of the men and the places in it. He will be on hand to answer questions about the film and its maker.”
