Paris-Roubaix rider prize money compared to US Masters golf

The riders who feature in the prize money at Paris-Roubaix would not want to be surviving on their purse from the contest.

The total prize money awarded at Paris-Roubaix was a very modest €91,000; a sum that perhaps won't come as a shock to fans of the sport but would undoubtedly surprise those outside the hardcore fan based.

Mathew Hayman (Orica-GreenEdge) won the gruelling 257.5km event which featured 27 sections of cobbles, for a total of 52.8km on the very testing pavé.

The leading five arrived at the finish together after 5hrs 51 minutes in the saddle and between them received €77,700 for their efforts.

The top prize was €30,000, with €22,000 for 2nd place, €15,000 for 3rd, €7,500 for 4th and as low as €3,200 for 5th.

A total of 20 cash prizes are awarded to the first 20 across the finish line.

And by the time you get to 11th place on the list – filled yesterday by world champion Peter Sagan (Tinkoff) - the money is as low as €1,000.

Those who placed from 16th to 20th each get €500.

To put it in perspective, the total prize fund of €91,000 at Paris-Roubaix compares to a $10 million prize fund at the US Masters Golf tournament.

It was in its final stages as the riders were washing the dirt off themselves in the velodrome in Roubaix yesterday evening.

The golfer who finished in 23rd place at the US Masters won $104,000, or roughly €91,000 - the same as the entire prize fund for Paris-Roubaix.

Hayman's winning prize of €30,000 in Paris Roubaix was roughly equal - ever so slightly higher - than the $33,000 awarded to the player who finished 45th at the Masters.

And Etixx-QuickStep Boonen's €22,000 runner-up prize in the French bike race was almost exactly the same - within $120 - as 50th place in the US Masters, which carries prize money of $25,200.

We can't bring you any more like-for-like comparisons because in the list of prize money published for the US Masters - carried in full below - the organisers stop at $25,200 for 50th.

There are money prizes for those who finish lower than 50th, of course.

But the organisers didn't state it - those prizes are too small to fix in golf it seems.

Instead, anyone finishing below 50th is awarded prize money based on their scores. So now you know!
