Paddy Power reveal odds on 38 riders in men’s Road Race Champs

Some of these odds are really interesting. Do you remember how badly wrong Paddy Power got last year's result? Matt Brammeier, above, has been installed as favourite.

The cyclists among Paddy Power’s staff have clearly been very busy lately.

They’ve studied the field in this Sunday’s men’s road race championships close enough to offer odds on almost a third of those taking part.

Of the 128 riders listed as starting the 105 mile combined U23 and elite men’s race on Sunday, the bookmaker has offered odds on a whopping 38 men.

There’s no surprise who has been installed as favourite; four-time champion Matthew Brammeier (MTN Qhubeka) is top of the tree at 9/4.

Letterkenny man Philip Deignan of Team Sky is next on 11/2, with defending champion Ryan Mullen next in the reckoning.

The An Post-Chainreaction rider is 13/2. When he won the race last year he was 33/1 so Paddy Power is clearly taking no chances with him this time around.

Outside of the most fancied trio, Mullen’s team mate Sean Downey is next at 9/1, having taken silver 12 months ago when he was 25/1.

Damien Shaw of Team ASEA, the bronze medal winner in Carlingford two years ago, is also available at 9/1 for Sunday.

Another An Post-Chainreaction man, Conor Dunne is next at 12/1, with Eddie Dunbar of NFTO Pro Cycling – a man who can go all the way on Sunday despite his youth – is at 14/1.

There then follows a trio of riders all at 16/1 including: Martyn Irvine (Madison Genesis); last year’s bronze medal winner Paidi O’Brien (Osbourne Meats-McCarthy Cycles) and Eoin Morton of UCD CC. O’Brien, incidentally, was also 16/1 last year.
