Paddy Doran and Beth McCluskey launch new coaching business for "Olympians to novices"

Like Paddy Doran, Beth McCluskey was a quality rider in her day and raced for Ireland. The duo has now established their own coaching business after long and successful careers coaching their individual stables of riders.

Having competed at international level themselves, coached large numbers of riders and managed Irish teams, Paddy Doran and Beth McCluskey have combined to launch a new coaching business.

Doran is perhaps best known of the pair, having been a top road man in his day, and has been preparing some of the best riders in the country for decades now with his renowned training programmes.

Along with McCluskey, he is very hopeful Peak Endurance Coaching can capitalise on the boom in the sport right now.

“We’ll be looking to simply get the best out of a rider, whether that’s getting a big pro contract, being selected for the Olympics or moving from an A4 licence up the grades,” he said.

“A lot of the boom in cycling here now is also in the leisure end of the sport and they are often people who have different goals.”

“Maybe they’ve been away from any form of exercise for a while and they want to get the weight down, or ride sportives during the summer or train for triathlons. We’d see our goal as helping people achieve their ambitions."

"People have busy lifestyles now too, with working and kids and other things, so a key feature is for those people to train as effectively as they can in the time they have.”

McCluskey is a former international cyclist and runner and has developed a particular expertise in nutrition.

She said the new coaching business would not simply put riders on training programmes, but would also focus on improving diet and advising them on recovery including massage and how to avoid and return from injury

“A lot of the work will obviously be one-to-one with riders, but we will be taking on groups as well; training clubs and also giving coaching seminars.”

“I think between the two of us we have a lot of expertise and experience and we can really get the best out of anyone.”

“Some people have targets that can seem modest to someone who’s been racing for years but for somebody who is overweight and isn’t happy about it, losing a couple of stone can be life-changing.”

“So we’re very keen to bring along as many people as we can. Somebody who has not been coached before will make huge progress very quickly with us.”

Well known cycling coach and former international rider Gillian McDarby had been involved with Doran and McCluskey in setting up the business. However, she has secured a role managing the Irish women’s rugby sevens team to the next Olympics in Rio in 2016 and so has had to end her involvement in Peak Endurance project.
