One of the closest passes (by a bus driver) we've seen in Dublin | Video

This was very low speed, but it was very close indeed...

We've seen some close passes in our time - and have experienced them ourselves while out on the bike - but this one caught our eye when it was sharped by a cyclist in Dublin.

The one 'plus' here - if you could call it that - is that this pass took place at very low speed. However, anyone who rides around Dublin will know what this feels like as bus drivers routinely squeeze past cyclists - the buses remaining in the bus lane and the cyclists being put under pressure on the inside.

In this case, the incident took place traveling down Dublin's north quays. It is hard to understand why the driver didn't just stay behind the cyclist as they were both headed for a stop anyway, at the red light just a few metres up the road.

We definitely don't want to slip into blaming the cyclist here, as this driving really leaves a lot to be desired. However, this location in Dublin, as with many spots in the city, is a prime example of why cyclists should take a central position in the bus lane, to dissuade these efforts to overtake so closely.

Very often if cyclists stay very close into the kerb - even if they are trying to be considerate - many drivers approaching from behind will see the clear lane as an invitation to squeeze past.
