One cycling club is in “Ireland's Top 20 Sports Clubs”. But which one?

From over 3,000 submissions one Irish cycling club has made it into the Top 20 Sports Clubs in Ireland and is in with a chance of the top prize and the cash that comes with it. Well done Comeragh CC! (Photo: Sean Rowe)

Comeragh Cycling Club, take a bow! They’ve made it into the Top 20 Sports Clubs in Ireland compiled by The Irish Times.

The Waterford outfit is perhaps best known for producing Olympian, double Rás winner and former pro rider Ciaran Power.

But it’s the club’s work within all levels of the sport – racing and leisure – across the age groups and ability spectrum for several decades now that has secured its place in the prestigious list.

The newspaper asked people to nominate their best sports club in Ireland and over 3,000 nominations were received before that stage of the process was closed and the judges took over.

All of the submissions were closely studied and the list whittled down, with the judges researching the clubs still on the list as it got smaller and smaller.

And now having been brought down to just 20 clubs – across all sports – Comeragh CC is still in there.

They are included with GAA clubs and those in running, rugby, angling, soccer, kickboxing, rowing, basketball and even dragon boat racing.

The competition judges are international rugby player Fiona Coghlan, Irish Times online sports editor Noel O’Reilly and GAA journalist Jerome Quinn.

They will now once again study the 20 clubs still standing and this Saturday, June 11th, the Irish Times will announce the five best clubs in Ireland from the list.

The following week, Saturday 18th, the Irish Times Best Sports Club in Ireland will be revealed in the paper, with the winner receiving €5,000 and another entrant getting €1,000.

Comeragh CC was nominated by Siobhan Power, and The Irish Times has said of the Waterford outfit:

“Established in 1988, the club has produced numerous champions, including the double Olympian and multiple Rás, national and international champion Ciarán Power.

“The club is immensely proud of its current superstar, the Rio 2016 Paralympic hopeful Damien Vereker.

“They are the epitome of dedication, commitment, care and giving, within their club and beyond.

“They are so deserving of this award for their club spirit, their wonderful sporting achievements and their willingness to help anyone who asks.”

Well done folks, especially Siobhan Power for driving the nomination forward!
