Darragh O’Mahony was the toast of the Irish at the Junior Tour of Wales today when he produced a superb display to take the King of the Mountains jersey.
The Munster Academy rider started the day fifth in the fight for that classification but did enough to overhaul overnight leader Nathan Draper (RST Racing Team) who won the race outright.
O’Mahony found himself in a number of escapes and when he was third over the opening ramp at Baverstocks after 15 kilometres he was back to within a point of Draper.
The Irish teenager also took maximum points at the next climb after 48 kilometres; the category two ascent at Bwlch.
He met plenty of competition from both Alfie Moses (HMT Academy with JLT Condor) and Joey Walker (RST Racing Team) but managed to accumulate a fine tally of 13 points, two clear of Moses and Walker who were joint second.
From a general classification point of view it was disappointing for the Irish, with just Simon Tuomey (Munster Academy) finishing inside the top 20. He was 19th at 2:36.

Adam Stenson (NRPT-Magnet.ie) started the final day nicely poised in sixth overall but he lost almost four minutes and slipped down to 24th overall at 3:21.
It was a brilliant weekend for him though as he won yesterday’s penultimate stage, with the help of a fine team effort, and really threatened the best young rider classification before today.
Michael O’Loughlin (NRPT-Magnet.ie) would have hoped for better but when he wasn’t feeling well last week his chances of a good result were lessened considerably.
Still, there was plenty of aggression shown from the 12-strong Irish representation today, with O’Mahony, Jake Gray and Tuomey among those in some of the more dangerous moves on the final 89-kilometre stage to Tumble Mountain, where Eddie Dunbar wrapped up victory last year.
After O’Mahony today - who finished sixth on the stage - Jake Gray (NRPT-Magnet.ie) was next best in 10th at 1:32 while Tuomey was just outside the top 20.
