Olympic triathlete Gavin Noble has bike from London 2012 snatched outside Dublin shop

Ireland’s Olympic triathlete, Gavin Noble has had his bike stolen from outside a shop in Dublin today, Friday.

The silver Specialized S Works Venge was robbed in an opportunistic snatch when he went into a shop in Ashtown in north Dublin to collect some kit on his way home from a spin. It is fitted with a quarq power meter, Garmin computer, Zipp 101 wheels and his name is on the saddle.

Noble told stickybottle he took his eye off the bike for a few seconds and was walking back to take it and cycle off when a thief darted in and grabbed it, leaving him unable to give instant chase because he was wearing his cycling shoes.

“I was out for a recovery spin this morning and was coming back from the Kilbride direction. I live in Castleknock so the quickest route to the quiet roads is through Ashtown and Finglas.”

“I had called into a running shop to pick up some kit I’d leant a mate. I literally turned and stepped into the shop and out again and as I was walking out, the guy ran across, grabbed the bike and sprinted off.”

“I was in my cleats so I didn’t get too far after him but the shop’s owner Kevin English chased him.”

“The guy headed down to the River Rd and out of sight. He was wearing a T-Shirt so I presume he wasn’t far from home, probably from the Ashtown, Cabra or Finglas area.”

“The bike frame was my reserve Olympic bike, with my name and the Irish flag on it. You have to have two bikes (for the Olympics) but all the components on it were the ones I used in the Olympic race itself; power metre, SRAM red group set, saddle, pedals.”

“The bike computer had all my training on it; little things like that that won’t mean much to anyone else. I’m sure people will understand; it’s very disappointing.”

“It’s something I use every day and spend so much time on. So cyclists will understand when I say that to me it’s more than just a bike.”

“I’ve had lots of support from people on social media and the guards have been very helpful so if it’s still in the country I’m hopeful of getting it back.”
