Fiachra Ó Muiré (DID Dunboyne) has taken victory in the Collins-Christle Memorial in Kilmessan, Co Meath, ahead of his planned departure for Australia next month.

The 25-year-old got clear with Mullingar strongman Damien Shaw very early in the race, with the duo working together all the way to the finish where Ó Muiré ran out a clear winner in the two-up gallop to the line.

“We got away on the second lap so that made it hard in itself, it was a long way to go to the finish,” said the winner of the six-lap race over a 14km loop.

“Damien really was very strong and some of his turns were massive. He’s a strong rider anyway but he’s in great shape at the moment just before heading to the Paralympics (as a tandem pilot). We got a time gap on the last lap of 1:45 so we had a decent enough gap.”

The duo went clear after the scratch group they were in closed a small handicap to the limit group of riders on the first lap.

Ó Muiré said while he had been feeling strong since riding the An Post Rás in May he had been frustrated because he had failed to convert that form into wins. However, he was delighted to take the victory yesterday ahead of his planned departure to Adelaide next month.

He is leaving Ireland for an extended trip in search of work as an electrician and said he will race in Australia once he gets settled.

After he had taken the win from Shaw yesterday, Craig Sweetman (Stamullen M Donnelly) was best of the rest of the modest field to take third place. See full set of photos below results.
