No fractures for Bennett, but still unclear if he can stay in Tour

Sam Bennett eases himself into a sitting position by the side of the road after his Tour de France crash.

Having been taken away on a stretched from the finish at Utah Beach of the opening stage of the Tour de France, medical checks on Sam Bennett concluded he had not suffered any broken bones.

The Irish sprinter from Carrick-on-Suir crossed the line today cradling his right arm in a manner riders often do when they have suffered a broken collar bone.

However, X-ray's on the Irish fastman have confirmed he has no broken bones, though his team said it was still unclear whether he would be able to start stage 2 tomorrow, Sunday.

The team - and Irish fans - will now be forced to wait anxiously to see how Bennett sleeps overnight and how his body reacts to the impact it has taken before a decision will be taken on his starting stage 2 or pulling out.

And if he were to start, his condition would need to be watched very closely.

Information released by the Tour said Bennett had suffered an injury to his hand and back. He left some skin on the road when he fell, having also injured his shoulder.

But his team has taken to Twitter to say he has suffered neither fracture nor serious injury, so hopefully he will be in a fit state to continue.
