No alcohol on sale at Dublin World Cup as no special licence obtained

The atmosphere at cyclocross races in Europe - especially in Belgium, and especially the Worlds - is often helped along by the beer tent. But the Dublin round of the UCI Cyclocross World Cup will be an alcohol-free zone

While cyclocross and beer often go hand-in-hand - especially for spectators in Belgium - the Dublin round of the UCI Cyclocross World Cup tomorrow will be an alcohol-free zone as no licence has been grant to sell drink at the venue.

The racing is set to unfold on the Sport Ireland Campus in Blanchardstown tomorrow and because there is no bar at that venue, a special exemption would have been needed for this weekend. However, the Sport Ireland Campus has issued a statement saying there had not been enough time since September, when the Dublin World Cup was confirmed, to secure such a licence for this weekend.

However, it has promised that food and (non-alcoholic) drinks will be on sale on the campus to sustain fans who brave freezing weather to watch the racing.

"Flanders Classics, Sport Ireland Campus and Cycling Ireland can confirm that a licence to sell alcohol has not been granted for UCI Cyclocross World Cup Dublin on Sunday, December 11th," said the statement issued via the Sport Ireland Campus Facebook page.

"The Sport Ireland Campus was confirmed as host venue in late September, and it has not been possible to obtain the licence in the limited time frame available.

"However, there will be a food and beverage offering in locations across the campus for the duration of the event."
