Nicolas Roche’s Team Sunweb has named its team for the Tour de France starting next week, with the Irishman in the line-up as expected.
It will be Roche’s 10th appearance in the race and comes in a strange season when riders have not had their usual build-up to the Tour.
The race also comes much later in the calendar and that factor, coupled with the shorter racing build-up, should throw up some interesting results.
Team Sunweb had decided on its line-up some time ago, with Roche always expected to ride.
However, in naming its confirmed team it has brought Casper Pedersen into the line-up to replace Jasha Sütterlin to support Cees Bol in the sprints.
The full line-up is: Søren Kragh Andersen, Nikias Arndt, Tiesj Benoot, Cees Bol, Marc Hirschi, Joris Nieuwenhuis, Casper Pedersen and Roche.
“We have a few races under our belts since the restart and we have seen that there is a lot more control in the peloton, meaning that there look to be slightly less chances for the break,” said Team Sunweb’s Tour de France coach Matt Winston.
“In theory that means that our chances in the sprints increase and we want to adapt to that, bringing specific qualities to our roster based on the development of these chances.
“We believe that adding Casper’s power, who is in great shape at the moment, to the lead-out increases our chances of bringing home a result from the sprints.
“Whilst still going for our chances in the breakaways with guys like Tiesj, Søren and Marc, we are confident that this will increase our chances for a stage result.”
