Nicolas Roche is training at altitude this weekend, at a Team DSM camp in Tenerife, after being given the all-clear for Covid-19.
The Irish WorldTour pro had ridden Milan-Sanremo this day two weeks ago before starting Volta Ciclista a Catalunya (2.UWT) two days later and getting into the mix on the opening stage.
However, following stage 1 in Catalunya he was forced out of the race after it emerged a team staff member he had been in contact with had tested positive for Covid-19.
Under protocols at present within the sport to help combat the spread of the virus and keep racing on the road, Roche was forced out of the event before stage 2 and underwent testing for the virus.
It was a blow for him and his team as the seven-day race in Catalunya featured plenty of climbing and would have been an ideal opportunity for him to build his early season condition.
Thankfully he was able to have a test very quickly and was given the all-clear in that initial test, as well as testing negative a few days later.
He told stickybottle while having to pull out of Catalunya was frustrating, he was pleased the testing was done so quickly so that normal life could continue and he did not miss out on a block of training.
Roche is currently in the middle of a training camp on Tenerife, having trained in Madrid last week, and has been getting the miles in on Mount Teide, the highest point in Spain and a favoured spot for altitude training with WorldTour teams.
The 36-year-old Irishman, now in his 17th season as a top flight professional, has been tackling the climbs on Tenerife alongside new team mate Romain Bardet and last year’s Giro d’Italia runner-up Jai Hindley.
