Nicolas Roche to ride new $20,000 Specialized McLaren on Tour; only 250 being made

The bike Nicolas Roche will ride in the Tour de France; a prototype for only 25o to be built and sold at a combined price of $5 million.

Having switched colours from their mainly yellow kit to a more fluorescent look for the Tour de France, Tinkoff-Saxo have also made one other change for the three week race.

Nicolas Roche has been selected as the only rider on the team to use the new limited edition Specialized Tarmac S-Works McLaren bike on the race.

The bike is claimed to be 10 per cent lighter than their new Tarmac version and is the result of the partnership between the bike manufacturer and the McLaren car company, with its expertise in carbon fibre development and manufacture.

It is the new carbon layup developed by McLaren’s Formula 1 engineers that results in the claimed weight savings.

The production S-Works McLaren will be finished in a McLaren Papaya Spark orange paint finish complete with silver decals.

It will also feature a Dura-Ace Di2 groupset with a new version of the S-Works chainset featuring a carbon fibre spider.

However, because Tinkoff-Saxo is sponsored by Sram, the bike Roche will be using features the Sram Red 22 groupset with 11-28 sprockets and a 53-39 chainset.

The exclusive package includes a matching pair of shoes and helmet and a shelf to store the bike soundly that should minimise the paintwork being knocked around.

The tyres are Specialized all round 24mm tubs on Roval CLX40 wheels, with the carbon make-up of the wheelset saving 80g over the two rims combined. There are 16 rather than 18 spokes on the front wheel and 21 rather than 24 spokes on the back wheel.

The total weight saving is 1.15kg.

The saddle on Roche’s bike for the Tour is a Prologo Zero CPC, the seatpost a carbon Zipp.  The handlebars are aluminium Zipp service course SL.

The version of the bike being offered for sale by Specialized will cost $20,000 and only 250 will be made; or $5 million for 250 bicycles.

Those wishing to purchase them must register their interest on Specialized’s site before July 31st and each bike will be made to the specific body geometry of each rider.

The tailor-made package includes a pair of S-Works road shoes and S-Works Prevail helmet in the same orange and black livery as the bike.
