Ireland’s Nicolas Roche signs new WorldTour contract for two years

Nicolas Roche is guaranteed his place in the top tier for at least two more seasons. The 35-year-old Irish cyclist has extended his time with Team Sunweb

Nicolas Roche will remain with the Team Sunweb outfit for two more years after signing a new contract.

The Irish pro,
who is currently out injured, joined the German team in the off-season last
year on a one-year deal.

And after a real
return to form this year he has extended with the team and will stay on until
at least the end of 2021.

Roche rode very
well in the Tour de France this year, going on the attack several times.

However, it was
in the Vuelta where he really excelled; making a key breakaway of the strongest
riders in the race on stage 2.

He claimed 2nd on
that stage and took the race lead which he held for three days. However, he then
crashed out of the race, breaking his kneecap.

That injury has unfortunately
forced him out of the World Road Championships this week, where he was due to
ride for Ireland in the TT and road race.

However, he now
has a new contract resolved and can look forward to more years at the top of
the sport.

Roche said he was
very pleased to agree terms and to extend his Team Sunweb tenure by two more
seasons.

He has said in
the past he would like to continue racing until he was aged 40 years. His new
deal will bring him up to the age of 37 years.

“I am extremely happy to be re-signing for two years with the team,” Nicolas Roche said of
his new deal.

“I have really found my place here and I enjoy the role
that I played in the team this year.

“It’s been
great to share my experience with the younger guys and support in the Grand
Tours.

“The days
in red at the Vuelta were really the highlight of my season and now with two
more years confirmed with the team, I’m already really looking forward to the
upcoming season.”

Team Sunweb coach,
Marc Reef, said he was delighted to
have Roche’s experience and ability to call upon.

“He’s one
of the most experienced riders in the peloton, having ridden 22 Grand Tours
throughout his career,” he said of
Roche’s career.

“Experience
that is invaluable in helping the young riders in the team. He rode two very
good Grand Tours, including three days in the red leader’s jersey at the Vuelta.

“And he
was a reliable team player in stage races throughout the year. His desire and
motivation will also be incredibly helpful in helping to coach and guide the
younger riders within the team over the coming years.”
