Nicolas Roche has said Bradley Wiggins was ethically wrong in his approach to the TUEs he availed of and he also called for an overhaul of the TUE system.
A member of Team Sky’s TTT line-up that took 4th at the World Road Championships yesterday, Nicolas Roche has been speaking to reporters in Doha about the TUE scandal that has rocked the team.
The Irish road and TT champion, who is leaving for BMC Racing, said he believed Bradley Wiggins was “ethically wrong” in his approach to availing of the TUEs before the Tours de France in 2011 and 2012 and the Giro d’Italia in 2013.
Roche pointed out he had called before for an overhaul of the TUE system, adding some of the events now under scrutiny had occurred before he joined the team two years ago.
He also said he had learned about what was going on from social media.
“It’s related to 2011, when I think two-thirds of us here today were not even on the team,” he told CyclingNews.
“It’s something we have more info on from reading the media than anything else.
"We learn about it on Twitter and the internet. That’s how much we know about it. You just get the info at the same time as everybody else.
“Like I said already on my Twitter a few weeks ago, when WADA was hacked the first time and before the Wiggins story, there is a major problem with TUEs,” Roche added.
“There is a problem with the actual system. Again, you can do whatever you want against Wiggins, but unfortunately, as far as ethically it’s wrong, he is within the rules.
“It is wrong that these rules are like that. That’s where the main problem is. Once we get those rules right, there won’t be any abuse, but that’s the priority.”
