Nicolas Roche is ‘5th hardest working pro’ in 2012, and that’s official

Nicolas Roche has put a lot of miles on the clock for Ag2r La Mondiale this season

Nicolas Roche has ridden more race kilometres to date in 2012 than every other rider in the professional peloton bar just four men, it has emerged.

With the season just a couple of races away from closing out for 2012, Roche has raced a total of 15,102kms. It is the fifth highest ‘kilometres raced’ tally in the IG Pro Cycling Index.

The index is one in a series of pro cycling indexes compiled by IG Markets, the company that sponsors both Team Sky and UK-based squad IG Sigma Sport.

The company sponsors and publicises the indexes, with the numbers crunched by sports data experts Opta.

According to the “distanced raced index”, Johan Van Summeren (Garmin Sharp) has raced 16,034km so far this season, more than any other pro in 2012.

Alessandro Ballan (BMC) is next on 15,892km. In third place is Roche’s Ag2r La Mondiale team mate Matteo Montaguti, who has ridden 15,538km. Just ahead of Roche in fourth is Ian Stannard (Team Sky) on 15,239km.

The number of race days, at 92, in which Roche ran up his huge mileage tally this year is one of the very highest in the bunch.

Roche kicked off his season on February 4th at the GP Costa degli Etruschi in Tuscany, while the latest IG index was taken two days ago, on September 25th.

In the 234 days between those dates, Roche’s tally of 92 races means he has raced an average of twice every five days, every week, non stop since he rode his season opener.

In the separate IG Index of the best riders of 2012, Roche is ranked 111th. That index is compiled by allocating points tallies for wins and placings in races, with harder events attracting higher points.

That IG Index works roughly in the same way as the official UCI rider rankings, though the points weighting is not exactly the same.

In the IG Index, races are tiered depending on history, importance and calibre of the field rather than simply by UCI race class allocation – 1.2, 2.2 and so on.

Wins effectively carry bonus points and there are extra points for multiple wins in top races, winning the hardest stages in the Tour de France, Vuelta and Giro or winning classics.
