Nicolas Roche has crashed on stage 6 of La Vuelta, coming down in a fall that has cost some highly fancied riders their place in the race.
Roche has been confirmed as one of the riders forced to abandon; a sad turnaround after he had led the race for the past three stages.
The EF Education First duo of Rigoberto Uran and Hugh Carthy have also been forced out of the race as a result of the crash.
Victor de la Parte (CCC Team), who was 13th overall this morning, has also been forced to abandon.
Uran and Roche are the biggest names whose forced departures have been confirmed as a result of the crash.
Roche was placed 5th on GC this morning and Colombian Uran was sitting 6th overall starting today's stage.
Nicolas Roche (Team Sunweb) was initially back on his bike and racing again though he was back in the cars receiving treatment on the go from a race doctor.
However, the Vuelta's official race feed very quickly said the Irish rider had been forced out.
More to come.
