Having endured a tough two weeks on the roads of Italy, Nicolas Roche has today abandoned the Giro d'Italia.

This race was his 19th career Grand Tour. And his abandoning today is the first time he has ever failed to finish a Grand Tour.

His team has confirmed that both Roche and team mate Loic Vliegen abandoned today.

While the team said Vliegen has been struggling with injury and illness, no mention was made of why Roche had pulled out.

Updates to come later

BMC Racing said it would provide more information on both riders when it knew more.

However, Roche has not been riding well since the race began. He has been putting in well below par performances considering what he is capable of.

Roche started today’s stage 15; some 176km from Tolmezzo to Sappada. However, he climbed off at the feed station.

We'll update when we have more information.
