Nicolas Portal of Team Ineos has praised the role of Eddie Dunbar, saying he was controlling the race for the team at key moments.
Team Ineos directeur, Nicolas Portal, has hailed the Giro performance of Eddie Dunbar, saying he is riding very strongly deep into the race.
The
young Irishman was by Pavel Sivakov’s side all the way on sage 19 yesterday,
helping him to retain his 9th place overall.
Dunbar (22) and team leader Sivakov (21) climbed with the general classification favourites on the uphill finish as the select group was whittled down to just a dozen riders.
Despite many attacks from the likes of Hugh Carthy (EF Education First), Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) and Primoz Roglic (Jumbo Visma), the two Team Ineos young guns lasted all the way.
Portal
praised them both, saying Dunbar was riding brilliantly despite the toll now
mounting on the riders’ bodies.
“Eddie did a really solid ride today and was key for Pavel. He was in
control and he was talking on the radio until the last kilometre more or less,” said
Portal.
“The climb suited (Dunbar) really well. And you can see he is recovering really well every day.
“It’s his first Grand Tour, yet he can still put in a really high
level of performance like today and the Giro is nearly finished, so chapeau to
Eddie.
“Sebastian and Ivan had some tired legs today but managed to support
Pavel until around three kilometres to race.
“I think the team did well. The plan was to make sure they didn’t
expend too much energy because tomorrow is such a key day in this last part of
the Giro.
“You can crack on tomorrow’s stage and obviously we don’t want that.
We want to stabilise Pavel’s place on GC.
“The idea will be to support Pavel again tomorrow. It’s such a hard
stage that there may be a different way for us to support Pavel.
“We will talk to the guys. You will have to wait and see. It will be brutal out there.”
