Newstalk's Paul Williams in hot water over comments about cyclists

Newstalk's Paul Williams is under pressure after these comments about cyclists made this morning on his breakfast show.

Newstalk's Paul Williams finds himself under pressure today after comments he made about cyclists during his breakfast radio broadcast this morning.

Appearing live on air with co-presenter Shane Coleman, Williams made off the cuff remarks that have alarmed many.

The Dublin Cycling Campaign, for example, described the journalist and broadcaster's words as "profoundly irresponsible".

Williams suggested that if a cyclist interfered with his rights on the road as a motorist, a particular scenario would play out.

“If a cyclist came up and started pulling my mirror on my car then me and the cyclist are going to have a serious crash,” he said, as his co-host tried to interject.

“And he won’t have to be worrying about banging into my car a second time, let me tell you that. You have been warned.”

The Dublin Cycling Campaign said it was concerned because the comments may lead others to act inappropriately towards cyclists.

"We are deeply disturbed by the coverage that cycling received on this morning's Newstalk Breakfast show, especially this perceived threat issued by presenter Paul Williams," it said.

"Utterances such as this are profoundly irresponsible and may be interpreted by some as justification for aggressive behaviour towards people on bicycles."

With the death toll on Irish roads mounting in recent weeks after an especially black period for cyclists, the comments were wholly inappropriate by Williams.

Let us know what you think; words that will genuinely make the roads more dangerous or a few stupid remarks best ignored?
