Entries for this year’s Suir Valley Three-Day are now being taken – though the first and fourth stages are yet to be finalised.

It’s the 10th anniversary of the race and the promoting club, Clonmel CC, are promising the best event yet so those keen on racing should do so as soon as possible.

For many riders it will mark the end of the racing season and for that reason it’s always a keenly-contested affair.

Past winners include Sean Lacey, Ciaran Power, Sam Bennett, Connor McConvey, Barry Twohig and Ed Laverack so it goes without saying the standard is extremely high.

Stages two and three will remain the same as previous years, those being the fast and flat 92-kilometre Sunday morning stage which usually ends in a sprint and the criterium later in the evening.

Entry is €350 per team or €80 per individual and forms are available here for download.

Note: Closing date for entry is Friday July 22nd.

The race is not advertised on the Cycling Ireland website so anyone interested in knowing more about this one should check out the club website. Looks like a good 'un.

One of the oldest and well-established cycling clubs in the country, Lakeside Wheelers Mullingar, recently celebrated their 40th birthday with 250 people packing out the Park Hotel in the town.

World champion Martyn Irvine and Cycling Ireland CEO Geoff Liffey were guests of honour on the night, while 2015 national road race champion Damien Shaw (An Post Chain Reaction) was also in attendance.

Shay O’Toole, organiser of the event and club chairperson, has been at the helm for a number of years now, having co-ordinated the national championships in 2014, the AN Post Ras stage finish this year as well as knees-up.

“It was the first time in the club’s history that something like this was organised and it got an amazing turnout,” he said of the ‘Suits and Sparkles’ themed night.

“The club has a long history with cycling and Mullingar has hosted stages of the Tour of Ireland back when Kelly was in his pomp. I think his arrival here as an amateur in 1976 was one of the reasons the club was set up in the first place.

“It definitely gave people a passion for bike racing.”

Today the club enjoys its biggest ever membership, hosts a number of popular one-day and multi-day races as well as criteriums and leisure cycles.

“With successive committees never wanting to stand still there was always a desire to develop the club as much as possible,” said O’Toole.

“For many years these administrations were kept busy catering for an ever growing membership, ensuring groups were safe on the road, running events and putting recognised structures of club management in place.

“The last committee continued this trend and reached another milestone in the club’s history with the acquisition of a clubhouse.”

The club host the annual Mullingar GP in association with Grange Motors on Sunday July 17th.
